Highway 1 Auxiliary Lane and Bus-on-Shoulder Project Construction Updates

Chanticleer Bridge 5-7

The RTC is currently constructing two phases of the Highway 1 Auxiliary Lanes and Bus-on-Shoulder project. Phase I from 41st Avenue to Soquel Drive, including a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue, began construction in early 2023 and is expected to be completed in 2024. Phase II from Bay Avenue/Porter Street to State Park Drive, including a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Mar Vista Drive and a replacement of the Capitola Avenue overcrossing, began construction in early 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2026.

Construction updates, including any road or highway closures or other activities that may impact traffic, will be posted weekly.

Full Overnight Closures of Highway 1 at 41st Avenue Sunday, June 2 through Tuesday, June 4

Travelers will encounter a full overnight closure of southbound Highway 1 at 41st Avenue for three consecutive nights beginning Sunday, June 2 through Tuesday, June 4. The full closure of southbound Highway 1 will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Travelers on southbound Highway 1 will be directed off at the 41st Avenue exit, travel across the offramp, and rejoin Highway 1 at the 41st Avenue onramp to southbound Highway 1.

Overnight Closures of Southbound Highway 1 Offramp at Soquel Drive Sunday, June 2 through Thursday, June 6

Travelers will encounter a closure of the Soquel Drive offramp on southbound Highway 1 for five consecutive nights from Sunday, June 2 through Thursday, June 6. This ramp closure will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Daytime Closure of Northbound Highway 1 Offramp at 41st Avenue Wednesday, June 5

Travelers will encounter a closure of the northbound Highway 1 offramp at 41st Avenue on Wednesday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Message signs will direct travelers to continue northbound to exit at Soquel Drive.

Message and directional signs will be in place to direct travelers who can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Other Closures

Capitola Avenue Overcrossing Long-Term Closure

The Capitola Avenue overcrossing at Highway 1 closed on March 11, 2024, to all vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic and will remain closed for approximately 14 months. A detour is in place.
