The San Vicente – Waddell Coastal Resilience project is a climate change adaptation effort addressing risks to Highway 1 and the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line on Santa Cruz County’s north coast. These transportation facilities cross San Vicente Creek at Davenport and Waddell Creek at the coastal entrance to Big Basin Redwoods State Park and are currently vulnerable to the impacts of extreme storms and other coastal hazards, like waves, erosion and sea level rise. The project seeks to envision ways to make these transportation facilities more resilient to coastal hazards, while also restoring or improving ecological function of the nearby creek, estuary, and beach environments.
The workshop will include an update for the community and the project team will seek feedback on the detailed technical analysis that has been conducted by the project team to identify potential vulnerabilities with the existing infrastructure and how shoreline change, coastal flooding, river flooding, sediment transport, lagoon dynamics and other changes are anticipated to impact both transportation infrastructure and adjacent ecosystems. The community will also be invited to share ideas and concerns about potential “alternative project concepts” and how these transportation facilities could look, function, and remain resilient into the future.
The San Vicente – Waddell Coastal Resilience project team is also pleased to announce an immersive new webpage is available at sccrtc.org/sanv-wa. Click the StoryMap link at the top of the webpage to see visuals of ongoing project analysis and videos of recent extreme storm events.
