RTC to Hold Public Workshops for Project Aimed at Adapting County Transportation Network for a Climate Resilient Future

The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) will hold two public workshops seeking community input on its Climate Adaptation Vulnerability Assessment and Priorities Report (CAVA) project.
The RTC, Santa Cruz County Planning, Public Works, and the Santa Cruz County Office of Response, Recovery, and Resiliency are partnering on the project that will identify transportation infrastructure assets such as roads, bridges, and trails in the county that will be most impacted by climate hazards and identify the order in which those assets should undergo a more detailed analysis for climate adaptation.
Climate change impacts are increasing at an alarming rate. Santa Cruz County is experiencing the impacts of extreme weather events and flooding, wildfires, sea level rise, coastal erosion, and extreme temperatures on the county’s transportation system. We need to plan for the impacts of climate change on transportation to minimize impacts on county residents.
Community members are invited to attend a workshop to review and provide input on the Climate Hazard Modeling Results and Draft Prioritization. The CAVA project team will be showing how County and Branch Rail Line Transportation assets such as roads, bridges, and culverts will be most impacted by future storms and wildfires.
The workshops will provide the opportunity for members of the community to review and provide input on draft maps showing the prioritized order in which these assets will be adapted to be more resilient to climate change accelerated-natural disasters.
