RTC to Hold Public Workshops for Project Aimed at Adapting County Transportation Network for a Climate Resilient Future

The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) will hold two public workshops seeking community input on its Climate Adaptation Vulnerability Assessment and Priorities Report (CAVA) project.

The RTC, the County of Santa Cruz Department of Community Development & Infrastructure, and the Santa Cruz County Office of Response, Recovery & Resiliency are partnering on the project that will identify transportation infrastructure assets such as roads, bridges, and trails in the county that may be impacted by climate hazards and identify the order in which those assets should undergo a more detailed analysis for climate adaptation.

Climate change impacts are increasing at an alarming rate. Santa Cruz County is experiencing the impacts of extreme weather events and flooding, wildfires, sea level rise, coastal erosion, and extreme temperatures on the county’s transportation system. We need to plan for the impacts of climate change on transportation to minimize impacts on county residents.

Community members are invited to attend a workshop to provide input on the Draft Project Framework to understand how impacts are already occurring and develop methodology for prioritizing future adaptation projects for County maintained transportation infrastructure and the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line.
